Monostereo "Bent"

At the premiere of eRATicate my friend Ian, who plays drums for the Seatle band Monostereo, asked if I interested in making a video for them. "Sure," I said. I didn't have much of concept built for it, except the slight story of the band on its way to a show, but I grabbed my super-8 camera anyways and we began shooting. I roamed around Seattle with each band member individually looking for fun stuff to shoot. With Ian, I shot hand-held frame-by-frame to make his stuff look jumpy, like "drums". Damon, the bass player, got the frame-by-frame treatment also, but I put the camera on a tripod and asked him to scoot around to make it look smooth. For Lea, the singer and lead guitarist, I rolled the camera at 12 frames a second to give it a slight "off" look, but to make her section the most consistant. I didn't want to use these techniques all the way through the video, so I employed my talented photographer wife, Kristan, to shoot stills of their show. It was a lot of fun to put together.

Shin Cup Soup
This was an idea I had thought of before I made eRATicate. My friend Zac (the first kickie) and I used to eat a lot of this spicy instant soup at work. One day on the way back from the store with a bagfull of it, I thought of this idea. I told it to Zac and he thought it was pretty funny. I wrote it down, like I do all my ideas, never thinking that I'd actually get around to making it. A year or so later, after I'd made two projects, I got the balls to make it. I put out a casting call on a Seattle filmmaking site for the lead guy and the grandparent types. Once rolling, it all came together in a few weeks. Since I was working with sound for the first time, I employed the help of a filmmaker friend Eric Firth to put together the final edit. I think it turned out to be pretty damn funny.

Lucky Shoes

I got a postcard in the mail from Addidas and the Northwest Filmmaker Forum for a short film contest. I put it to the side, not really giving it any notice. But the $10,000 prize kept tugging at my greedy side. I couldn't think of any ideas for it, but two images kept coming to mind... a guy finding a pair of shoes floating up on the beach and then the shoes breaking and the guy desperately trying to put them back together. A day of emails with a creative friend of mine lead to the storyline that it turned into.
The deadline was about three weeks away. We shot the 2nd weekend after the idea came to fruition. I couldn't think of anybody for the lead and didn't have the time to search, so I played the part. Jim, my DP for eRATicate, and I ended up shooting 90 min of footage for the short that had to be three min or less. Editing it was quite the experience, having that time limit made it a challenge, but I think it made the whole thing better, as I really trimmed it down to its necessities. My friend Brandon put together the score in less than a week. It was great to see the whole thing come together so quickly.

25¢
Hi, this is Kristan - the wife. I was inspired by Ross to make a short film. As a still photographer I love imagery and film, capturing the moments to be remembered. This reminded me of a time when a good friend, Mian had her birthday and our friend Jimmy and I took her all over Seattle to different places to celebrate. We ended up in West Seattle where we met a little girl who had a pet rat with her on the beach. Some kids were making fun of her and it really hit me how sad that was. A few months later I was talking to Jim about making a short film about a little girl getting made fun of because of her pet rat. He helped me develop the story for 25¢. Then we ask our friend Mian to get involved and that turned into including some of her personal life in the story, through her character. This made the project very special to all of us. We spent about 2 months developing the project, writing and re-writing, until we finally shot it in July 2003. The little girl I found through my job at a photo lab in Seattle, Panda Lab. Her mom is a customer there and she was very excited we wanted to use her daughter for our project. She did a great job for her first time acting. We had a good friend Andy, an amazing editor/director edit this project for us. Our last amazing resource (also another great friend) Brandon completed it with the perfect original score. I don't plan on directing again, but it really was a wonderful experience with a wonderful cast and crew I couldn't have done it without them.

Blessed Light "See You Again"
This is a project I've been trying to put together for a long time. Ever since the Monostereo video I've been wanting to make a video for one of my favorite Seattle bands, Blessed Light, who my friend German plays bass for. Three weeks before my family and I planned on moving out of Seattle, it finally came together. I met with the band's lead singer and founder Toby Gordon and we talked about some ideas. He wanted to make a video for a song German had wrote. I came up with a couple ideas for it, but nothing that begged to be made. German came to me with his own idea, which I liked much more than my own. We were shooting a few days later. It was interesting working on an idea that wasn't totally mine. It was more of a challenge as I didn't know exactly where I was going with it.

The Turning Point
4/7/6: The film is finally getting close to being finished. My third cut of the film was done about a month ago. Trying to get a lot of other stuff in order. Working on the promotional materials, poster, photos and such. Trying to get the rights to a couple of songs. Plan on having a screening of it in Ashland in the coming months. Trying to get a website up. A lot of juggling going on right now. Can't wait to have it over and done with and out there for the public.
6/20/5: I've been editing for the past couple months. So far I've got a rough cut of the first hour or so. The film is slowly, but surely coming together. It's going to be a long, tough road to get the film to completion. But it is something that will be done. To wet your appetite, I've cut together a trailer for you to see a bit of what the story and style of the final film will be. Check it out below.
11/28/04: My wife Kristan and I decided to have a kid nearly two years ago. I wanted to make a short documentary for our child to have in their future so they could see where they were coming from. I started shooting. A month or two into it, I realized I was going to have way too much footage to keep it to a short film. So I decided to turn it into a feature, which I would put into festivals and hopefully find somebody to distribute. (Whether that be on TV, video or ideally theatrically remains to be seen.) Our son Ash was born on May 7th, 2004... and I'm still shooting footage. I haven't even begun to wade through the 50 hrs of footage and hundreds of stills that will make up the film. I'm hoping I can finish the film within a year or so, but that depends on how much time I can devote to it. It is by far the most ambitious project I've tackled yet. Wish me luck!
